Look for:

• Carpet that is torn, loose or missing
• Exposed bunk boards
• Soft, cracked or warped wood
• Loose staples or fasteners
• Debris packed into the carpet
• Rusted brackets or mounting hardware
• Bunks that have shifted out of alignment
• Uneven contact between the pontoon tubes and bunks

Carpet can sometimes hide the condition of the bunk board beneath it. Once the pontoon is safely off the trailer, remove or pull back the damaged material and inspect the entire board.

If the board is soft, split, badly warped or beginning to deteriorate, it should be replaced rather than covered.

It is also important to identify which part of the trailer you are replacing.

The long bunks beneath the pontoon tubes help support the boat’s weight. Shorter carpet-covered boards near the front or sides of the trailer may serve as guides or bumpers during loading.

• Deep cracks or splitting
